About Me

My photo
I am a special educator who has recently relocated to Manila. One of my goals for this year is learn more about early childhood education and special education in the Philippines. I have been visiting schools and therapy centers (among others) and providing info here about them. I do not aim to endorse these different centers/schools, but my intention is to provide information in case some people are interested in learning more about them.

The Beacon School

I went to visit The Beacon School on Chino Roces Ext. in Makati today and got to go around some of the classrooms and take pictures of the facilities...

I loved that they made the boxes into a house, a church and airplanes!

That's right!  "...unless the girls alow (sic) us to go in ther (sic) house!"

Non-working holidays :)

When asked what I was going to be doing today, I said that I had declared today as a "non-working holiday" :).  Despite not working right now I have been really busy making connections and making more plans.

I am looking forward to tomorrow's visit to the CREATE program in Merville, which a friend arranged for me.  I was looking at their website today and I am really excited...

Gotta run and make some more phone calls...

A visit to DLSU

Last Thursday I went to visit the DLSU and I have to say I was amazed by the various programs offered by the College of Education.  Among others, they have undergraduate degrees in:

 ...and graduate degrees in:

Doctoral Degree Programs

Science Education Department
Counseling and Educational Psychology
Department of English and Applied LInguistics
Educational and Leadership Management Department

Master's Degree Programs

Counseling and Educational Psychology Department
Department of English & Applied Linguistics
Educational and Leadership Management Department
Science Education Department

Diploma/Certificate Programs

St. La Salle Institute of Graduate Studies

(List of course offerings copied and pasted from DLSU's website.  For more accurate and detailed information on this, check their site or contact their offices.)

Really, really impressive. Kind of made me want to go to school again.  Kind of.

Check it out at

Autism Society Philippines Family Power Forum

I was amazed and in awe of these parents as they shared their knowledge and experiences in raising children/young adults with autism.  In fighting for their children's rights and education over the years, they have become more of an expert than I will ever be. Dang Koe, Chelo Tirol-Formosa, Chrissy Roa and Evert Malapad, I take my hats off to you (and to all the families with children with autism) - mabuhay kayo!

Quality Life Discoveries

As part of the Autism Consciousness Week activities, there was a seminar yesterday at Quality Life Discoveries.  It is a beautiful building with state of the art facilities for different kinds of therapy and I was very excited to be able to visit and take pictures.  Imagine my disappointment when I realized that I had left my camera at home! Ahhh...I did talk to Teacher Archie David and he said I could come and visit again.

Here is the website so you can take a look at what they offer:

And here are pictures copied from their website...

Multi-sensory environment (MSE)

I can't recall what this is called (a "bubble something") but it's part of the MSE.

Thera-suit being used in the Neurodevelopmental gym - for children with motor issues.

Neuro-developmental gym / Universal exercise unit

Aquatherapy

One rather interesting therapy used is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy...

If I understand it right, a lot of problems ( with kids with special needs and people with traumatic brain injury, etc.) are caused by not getting enough oxygen in the brain.  This therapy provides 100 % oxygen over a number of sessions to help the brain recover, resulting in recovery being faster.

QC Preschool

Last year (around July or early August), I got to visit a couple of preschools in Quezon City.  These two are a couple of the better ones they have.

Lots of kiddos in one classroom.

Teacher made worksheets.

I liked those dolls on top!

part of the playground

This is the second school.
Trying to remember the number but I think it's 20++ preschoolers to 1 teacher.

I think that's supposed to be a garden out there.

Shelf with materials, covered in plastic.  Probably to keep the dust away.
